Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal has defied all expectations and not only topped the domestic box office charts, but did so setting records on Indian as well as foreign soil. The revenge thriller nabbed the second best opening at domestic box office when it collected Rs 63.80 crore on Friday, behind only Shahrukh Khan’s Jawan’s 75 crore opening. Animal then went on to collect a total of Rs 201.76 crore in its opening weekend, a rare feat. However, the trade pundits suggest the film is unlikely to stop anytime soon and is expected to main a good hold over the week days.
Overseas, Animal grossed $13.88 million in its opening weekend. Of that total, $6.1 million came from US box office only where it snatched the second best opening weekend for a Indian movie.
The Monday collection predictions sit at around Rs 35 crore. Surely, the rest of the week days will see a gradual decline in the collections but considering the sheer buzz around the film right now, it’ll most likely end up surpassing Rs 300 crore mark in the first week itself. Animal will also become Ranbir Kapoor’s highest grosser in its second week once it crosses Sanju’s lifetime Rs 342 crore mark.
Vicky Kaushal starrer Sam Bahadur, the other biggie that landed at box office past weekend didn’t perform as well as it could’ve as Animal stole all the limelight away. Sam Bahadur opened with a Rs 6.25 crore Friday and collected a total of Rs 25.55 crore over the weekend. Reviews and audience’s word of mouth is good enough and save for the Animal’s battering, the film had potential for far better numbers. Still, it’s not a loss and the film is putting up respectable numbers.
